About

Named after a forest on the Viphya plateau.

Luwawa Forest Reserve sits in northern Malawi. The software is built in Blantyre by Fickson Limited, for companies that run their people operations here.

Rolling highland covered in pine plantation on the Viphya plateau, mist lying in the valleys at dawn.

Why

Most HR software assumes a country it was not built for.

Tools written elsewhere arrive with the wrong currency, tax rules that cannot be edited, and a bank integration that does not reach Malawian banks. What is left is a spreadsheet for payroll, a WhatsApp group for leave, and a filing cabinet for everything else.

Luwawa was built the other way round. Kwacha is the default, rates are data the operator controls, and the parts of the product that touch a country sit in a pack that can be swapped for the next one.

How we build

Three commitments.

First

Records over messages

If a decision matters, it belongs on a record with a name and a timestamp against it, not in a thread someone has to scroll back through.

Second

Rates are data, not code

A budget speech should not require a software release. Statutory rates are dated rows an operator maintains, and history is never overwritten.

Third

The next country is additive

Nothing Malawi-specific lives in the payroll runner. Adding a market means adding a pack, not forking the product.
